How to Improve Your Building Company’s Efficiency

When you are ready to grow your building company, there are many processes you should have in place to ensure growth does not compromise your efficiency or quality.

Plan your projects efficiently

Planning within your building company is the key to increased efficiency and company growth.

Several different roles within the company can participate in planning. However, the Project Manager is the glue that holds an entire construction project together. Hiring a project manager is a process where you want to make sure you spend time getting the best person for the job.

Professionalism is a must as is the ability to think on your toes and possess excellent negotiation skills.  The project manager should be highly organised and efficient.

Ensure the salary you are offering will attract an experienced and proven project manager.

Communicate effectively with trades and clients

Communicate so that everyone working on a project is aware of the expectations. Manage client expectations by communicating with them exactly what the project timeline will be.

Again, the project manager plays a pivotal role in communicating between the different parties of a construction project. Ensure this person is an excellent communicator.

Assess your worksites and processes continually

Providing a safe worksite for your trades, contractors and employees is not only a legal requirement, but it is proven to increase productivity on the worksite.

If your trades have less red tape and obstacles to tackle they will be able to concentrate on producing quality work rather than dealing with worksite politics and legalities that can be managed by the Project Manager.

Have appropriate processes in place to ensure delays on your worksite are appropriately planned for and managed.

Improving your processes and ensuring all trades and employees are aware of your expectations and requirements will increase the overall efficiency and longevity of your building company.

Improving processes isn’t a job that should be done once and forgotten about.  Safety laws are continually changing, and changes in technology and skills mean that all worksite procedures and processes should be reviewed periodically.

Hire quality trades and hold onto those who perform well

It is proven that the right people for the job will make a project run smoothly.

Ensure your trades are qualified, licensed and professional.

Trades who conduct themselves well on the worksite and with clients are an asset to any building company.

Look after hard working trades by paying them well. Providing onsite benefits such as a fridge stocked with snacks and drinks (if facilities allow for this) will keep trades on the worksite rather than at the local shop picking up food.

Check-in regularly with trades and ask for their opinions, make them feel like a valued member of your building company, and you will be rewarded with high-quality output.

Putting the right staff, procedures and policies in place will increase the efficiency of your building company and this will not only lead to company growth but can also increase the profit on your projects and give your company an excellent reputation within the industry.
