On a big worksite with many different trades, materials and pieces of equipment, it can be challenging to make sure everything is safe. We’ve put together a few quick tips to help you ensure the safety of your workers and make your worksite more reliable.

Understand your legal requirements

There are many different safety legal requirements and codes of conduct to follow within the construction industry.

Always know your legal requirements to provide a safe work site. Speak to government agencies and complete regular training to ensure you’re still up with the latest changes to Occupational Health and Safety laws.

Requirements of the Project Manager

The project manager is responsible for many different areas of a build, including regular safety audits of the worksite.

Safety audits should include:

  • Equipment inspections,
  • Reviewing emergency procedures,
  • Marking materials that may present risk,
  • Ensuring signs and barricades are in place where necessary.

Ensure trades, contractors and employees are aware of their responsibilities

Train your employees to be mindful of their role in keeping your work site safer and make sure contractors have completed necessary training as well. Train all trades, contractors and employees on your requirement - what you expect from them and their conduct while they are onsite.

Please make sure all trades, contractors and employees are equipped with the necessary safety gear to carry out their responsibilities.

Offer rewards and incentives for clean worksites and always prohibit the use of drugs and alcohol.

A safe work site will not only keep your trades, contractors and employees safe while they carry out their jobs; it will also lead to an overall increase in productivity.
